Startup Cost: Bathroom Fixtures and Furnishings
The bathroom layout is simple, but sometimes its easy to overlook the simplest things, so let’s take a look at what you will need. Both of our centers had two separate bathrooms, men’s and women’s. Each bathroom had two stalls – one being a larger ADA handicap compliant stall. We also had two sinks in each bathroom, make sure they are sturdy – during teen nights we’ve always had girls hang out in the bathroom and sit up on the sinks. Be sure to have a female employee on staff during teen night that can walk into women’s bathrooms, when or if needed.
You can avoid major start up costs by finding a facility with a build out already suitable to your needs, rather than incurring major build-out expenses.
Here’s how we had our bathrooms setup:
Baby Changing Station
One in each bathroom. You can get the full station or just the pad if you’ve got a suitable piece of furniture to use. There are also wall-mountable stations, but those will cost much more.
Paper Dispensers
These will range in price. We used the manual ones. The motion activated dispensers will cost more, but typically save money on paper because people will use less.
Step Stools
These are great. They’re cheap, and come in handy a lot! Use these instead of modifying bathroom toilets or urinals for the youngest kids – so keep one in each bathroom. You’ll also need one one or two in the lobby around arcades and by the water fountain.
Trash Bins
We kept one heavy duty trash bin in each bathroom and one smaller trash can in women’s stalls.
